چکیده

In this study, a full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) was monitored over a period exceeding 6 months. Two common chemical cleaning modes, chemically enhanced backwash and clean in place, with sodium hypochlorite were monitored with respect to microorganism log removal value (LRV). Overall, impact to microorganism LRV for virus, bacteria and protozoa due to cleaning was negligible with respect to overall system variability. High permeate chlorine residual post chemically enhanced backwash was noted. The findings of this study will facilitate appropriate risk management for MBR systems used for water recycling.

The continued depletion of fresh drinking water resources throughout the world has increased the need for a variety of water treatment and recycling strategies. Conventional wastewater treatment processes rely on extensive chemical post-disinfection to comply with the stringent microbiological safety for water reuse. When well designed and operated, membrane bioreactors (MBRs) can consistently ...

Effect of Concentration of Cations on Activated Sludge Properties and Membrane Fouling in Membrane Bioreactors for Wastewater Treatment

This paper presents the results of an investigation on the effects of concentration of cations on activated sludge properties and membrane fouling in submerge membrane bioreactors. The working volume of the experimental setup was two liters. The cellulose acetate membrane was immersed in the bioreactor. The flocculability, settling properties and fouling propensity of activated sludge was measu...

Critical risk points of nanofiltration and reverse osmosis processes in water recycling applications

NF/RO membrane filtration processes have been recognized as an important technology to facilitate water recycling. Those processes are well-proven technologies, which can be used to remove a wide range of contaminants including trace contaminants that are of particular concern in water recycling. However, risk implications in association with brine or concentrate and membrane cleaning wastewate...

The Application of Membrane Distillation for Broth Separation in Membrane Bioreactors

The possibility of applying membrane distillation to support the fermentation process was investigated. The capillary polypropylene membranes were assembled in the membrane modules. The studies were carried out using the standard solutions containing the compounds frequently occurring in the broths such as ethanol, citric, acetic and lactic acids, glycerol and 1,3-propanediol. The performance o...

Treatment of Real Paper-Recycling Wastewater in a Novel Hybrid Airlift Membrane Bioreactor (HAMBR) for Simultaneous Removal of Organic Matter and Nutrients

In this study, a novel integrated Hybrid Airlift Membrane Bioreactor (HAMBR) composed of oxic, anoxic, and anaerobic zones was developed to simultaneously remove organic matter and nitrogen from real paper-recycling wastewater. The removal efficiencies of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and Total Nitrogen (TN) for permeate and supernatant were in the range of ...
